Best time to clean windows and facades in Narva and Ida-Viru

How Estonian weather decides when to clean windows and facades.

The short answer

  • The exterior washing season in Estonia runs roughly April to October — above-freezing temperatures are needed for both the solution and the rinse.
  • Spring is the best time for a deep clean: winter road salt, grit and pollen come off in one go.
  • Autumn, before the dark period, keeps light through the windows at its highest and prepares surfaces for winter.
  • On the coast (Narva, Narva-Jõesuu) salt air is an added factor that calls for slightly more frequent cleaning.
  • No washing below zero: water freezes on the surface and behind seals and can damage the material.

In Estonia, exterior cleaning is not a year-round job, and that is not just about comfort. The weather decides whether a wash succeeds at all and how long the result lasts. Below is the simple seasonal logic that applies in Narva and across Ida-Viru.

Why the season runs April to October

A soft wash solution needs above-freezing temperatures to work, and the rinse water must not freeze on the surface. When the air is below zero, water sits on the glass, in render joints and behind seals as ice, which expands in winter and breaks the material. That is why the safe washing window is roughly April to October, on a warm, dry day.

Spring — the best time for a deep clean

Winter leaves three things at once: road salt and grit on lower surfaces, road dust, and a green film from prolonged damp on north elevations. A spring wash removes them before pollen season adds its layer. It is also when algae is at its weakest and a soft wash result lasts longest.

  • Siding and roof — soft wash in spring, once winter is behind us.
  • Driveway and walkway — pressure wash to clear road salt and grit.
  • Windows — the first of two, to remove pollen and winter salt.

Summer — maintenance washes and retail

Summer is peak season for retail and restaurants: shopfronts and terraces have to look their best every day. For houses, summer is a good time for a one-off maintenance wash if spring was missed, and for a facade check before autumn.

Autumn — preparing for winter

An autumn wash does two things. First, clean windows let in as much light as possible through the short days. Second, it removes summer deposits — pollen, exhaust film, cobwebs — before the damp autumn dries them onto the surface. A clean surface handles winter better than one carrying a layer.

The coast: Narva and Narva-Jõesuu

Being near the sea adds a factor inland does not have: salt air. It lays a film on glass and facades that hazes the surface and holds moisture. Near the coast it is worth cleaning windows a little more often than twice a year, especially on the seaward side.

When not to wash

  • Below zero, or if a frost is forecast overnight — water freezes on the surface.
  • In direct hot sun on large glass — water dries too fast and leaves streaks (we work in shade or early morning).
  • Just before an expected pollen or dust event — the result will not even have time to dry.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to clean a house's windows and facade?
Spring is the best time for a deep clean, because winter road salt, grit and pollen come off in one go and algae is at its weakest. An autumn wash before the dark period keeps light at its highest and prepares surfaces for winter. Windows are worth cleaning at both.
Can windows and facades be washed in winter?
Not below zero. Rinse water freezes on glass, in render joints and behind seals, where it expands and can break the material. The safe washing season in Estonia is roughly April to October, on a warm, dry day.
How often should windows be cleaned on the coast?
Near the coast (Narva, Narva-Jõesuu) windows are worth cleaning a little more often than the usual twice a year, because salt air lays a film on the glass and holds moisture. The seaward side soils fastest.
Is a hot, sunny day good for washing?
On large glass in direct hot sun, no — water dries too fast and leaves streaks. On such days we work in shade or early morning. A warm, overcast or diffuse-light day is ideal.
Is spring or autumn better for washing?
Both have a role. Spring clears winter's residue and gives the most durable result; autumn prepares surfaces for winter and keeps light coming through the windows in the dark months. Most houses get the best result by washing at both.
