Narva Town Hall — window cleaning in a historic building

Every sash opens over a drop with nothing outside to stand on. So the work was done from inside the opening: harness on, line tied off.

What makes a window like this different

A historic window does not get cleaned faster. It gets cleaned more carefully.

  • Timber sashes divided into small panes — at that size nothing beats a hand and a squeegee.
  • Every window opens over a drop, with nothing outside to stand on.
  • Old glass and painted joinery that will not take harsh chemicals or a blade.
  • A building in use, so the job had to leave no wet floors, no ladders in doorways and nothing behind.
A small-pane sash worked through square by square, with a sprayer and a squeegee.

How the job ran

Six steps, in the order they happened on site.

  1. 01

    The room got covered first

Sheeting under the opening, sill and radiator covered. Nothing drips onto a historic surface.

  2. 02

Harness and anchor on every sash

A full-body harness and a line tied to a fixed point inside the room before anyone sits in the opening.

  3. 03

    Outside face, from inside

The sash swings inward, so the outer face of the glass comes to the cleaner instead of the other way round. No scaffolding in the street, no lift in the square.

  4. 04

    Pane by pane, by hand

Mild solution, microfibre and a squeegee sized to the pane. Glazing bars and putty lines wiped dry so no water sits in the timber.

  5. 05

    Frames and sills too

Reveals, frames and sills wiped down. Clean glass in a dirty frame still reads as dirty.

  6. 06

    Closed up and checked

Every sash latched again, floor dry, and the glass checked against the light from inside and from the square.

What changed

On a historic window the result is not only the glass. It is also that the frame came through the clean undamaged.

  • Daylight back in rooms that had been working through a grey film.
  • No standing water left in the joinery or the putty lines — the thing that shortens an old window's life.
  • No scaffolding, no lift, nothing blocking the square outside.
  • The same routine repeats on a schedule, so the building never gets back to where it started.

What it covers and what sets the price.

Window cleaning

Glass, frames and sills cleaned streak-free — for houses, apartment buildings and commercial storefronts. Windows higher up in a harness or from a lift.

Common questions

Do you clean windows in listed and historic buildings?

Yes. The difference is method, not price: no harsh chemicals, no blade on old glass, no water left sitting in timber or putty, and floor protection under every opening.

How do you reach windows you cannot get to from outside?

Most historic sashes open inward. We work from inside the opening on a harness and anchor line, which is faster and cheaper than a lift and leaves the street clear.

Can you work while the building is open?

Yes. We move room by room, keep floors dry and covered, and agree the order with the building manager so the public part is never blocked.

How often should windows like these be cleaned?

Twice a year keeps both the glass and the timber in good order: spring for winter salt and grit, autumn before the dark season. A building on a busy street needs it more often.

Have a building like this?

Historic sashes, high glass, or just a lot of small panes — we will come and look, and tell you how to reach it safely. The visit is free.
