Why moss has to come off
A green roof isn't only a looks problem. Moss works like a sponge, holding moisture against the roofing — and that's what shortens a roof's life.
The roof wears out faster
Moss keeps the roofing permanently damp. Moisture accelerates wear and invites winter frost damage.

Moss roots work into roof tiles and bitumen shingle, loosening the surface year after year.

Soft washing, not pressure washing
Pressure knocks the moss off the top, but takes the protective granules off bitumen shingle and the surface layer off concrete tile with it. The roof looks good for a week, then ages faster than it did before. We never use pressure on a roof.

We let the solution work, then rinse under control where the roofing needs it. Rain and UV carry the dead growth away over the following months.

Wouldn't pressure washing be cheaper?
In the short term yes, in the long term no. Pressure strips the protective granules off bitumen shingle and the surface layer off concrete tile, which shortens the roof's life by years and voids most manufacturer warranties. We never use pressure on a roof.
How long does the result last?
Usually 2–4 years, depending on the location and how shaded the roof is. Next to woodland, in deep shade or near the sea it can need doing more often. A preventive treatment extends it further.

When is the best time to clean a roof?
Spring and summer are the easiest, but the work can be done through any frost-free part of the season. A clean before winter stops moss blocking the gutters and moisture causing frost damage.
